Despite earlier concerns that a bull would be slaughtered as part of the performance titled 150.Action, festival director Leigh Carmichael told ABC media on Wednesday that there would not be a live slaughter
Mr Carmichael said the animal would be slaughtered humanely before the performance.
The work is directed by controversial artist Hermann Nitsch.
Dark Mofo’s program describes it as a bloody, sacrificial ritual performed by the patriarch of Viennese Actionism, his devoted disciples and an orchestra.
A content warning is listed at the bottom of the work’s description, with parents strongly advised the work is unsuitable for children and will contain distressing imagery, nudity and strong adult themes.
A petition was launched by Animal Liberation Tasmania to cancel 150.Action.
Since the petition, Hobart City Council: cancel Dark Mofo 150.Action slaughter of bull for “art”, went live on Wednesday it has received more than 250 signatures.
