Fathers, you are the traditional wage earners for the family, even though these days most mothers need to work as well. However, fathers you are far more than that! You are so important to your children’s wellbeing and future development. US government research reveals the following:
When fathers are involved in the lives of their children, especially their education, their children learn more, perform better in school, and exhibit healthier behaviour. Even when fathers do not share a home with their children, their active involvement can have a lasting and positive impact.
The presence a responsible father promotes improves academic performance and reduces disciplinary problems among children. Pre-schoolers with actively-involved fathers have stronger verbal skills. Girls with strong relationships with their fathers do better in mathematics. Boys with actively-involved fathers tend to get better grades and perform better on achievement tests.
Research also reveals that even very young children who have experienced high father involvement show an increase in curiosity and in problem solving capacity. Highly involved fathers also contribute to increased mental dexterity in children, increased empathy, less stereotyped sex role beliefs and greater self-control.
The Bible also has some good information and instruction about fathers. A God-honouring man who lives justly with honesty and integrity provide a blessing to his children who follow after him. Good fathers are by nature compassionate just as our Heavenly Father is compassionate to those who seek to follow His ways.
God has given fathers the role of spiritual oversight in the family. Whilst men and women are created equal, the man was given the role of spiritual oversight because he is less likely to be ruled by emotions, is by nature a protector of those he loves and has been divinely given the wisdom to make good choices for his family.
This of course is speaking of good fathers. Unfortunately, this has not always been the experience of many families in this or previous generations. Today however is a good day to encourage fathers to read this and know just how special and important they are and the awesome responsibility that has been given to them in the family unit.
Grandfathers, likewise you are very important to your children and grandchildren and with the wisdom of years, you can be the greatest encouragers of your sons and daughters and your precious grandchildren.
