The dreary weather may have depressed visitors to the Dahlia and Cut Flower Show on Saturday, February 24, but that meant more room to check out all the entries submitted for judging.
Tenterfield Horticultural Society’s Shirley Lewis said the show didn’t attract the busloads of gardeners from the coast this year, and Stanthorpe entries were decimated by an infestation in the dahlias up there, but the standard of entries belied the tough season.
She said it was mostly a local crowd this year, who enjoyed the luncheon before double-checking the judges’ decision on the stunning samples of flora.
“It was a good collection, considering the weather,” Mrs Lewis said.
She was impressed by the exhibits, particularly the roses given recent outbreaks of disease including black spot in response to the heat.
The special Red, Black and Wild category this year attracted some unique entries, with Rhonda Tyacke’s winning entry certainly meeting the brief.
“Some of the girls were really clever with what they created,” Mrs Lewis said.
The children’s section was again popular, with regular contributor Bejay Holley snagging Best Junior Exhibitor.
Kerrie Andrews had one lone flower in her garden and snipped it to enter the competition, and walked away with grand champion rose proving you should never underrate your chances.
“It happens quite a lot,” Mrs Lewis said.
“We have people telling us they have only this flower and should they put it in, only to have it win a major prize.
“It’s good because it breaks up the winners and gives encouragement to other newcomers.”
She recently had a similar experience where she entered a pansy just to make up the numbers, and came away with a win.
The next chance to snare a champion’s ribbon with a rogue choice is in the society’s Spring Flower Show at a date yet to be determined. It may be delayed until October this year, to accommodate any late frosts and to avoid clashing with September’s Peter Allen Festival.
