It’s been a six year lay-off for the popular dancing affair and organiser Beryl Dean said it was time to bring it back to the masses.
Six hundred people turned out for the inaugural event in 2005 with the last running in 2008.
“I saw it on TV and took it to our committee (Cancer Support Group of Tenterfield) at the time,” Ms Dean said.
“It was really scary – we were working in the dark but we went with it.”
The first foray proved popular with hundreds of tickets selling out in a couple of hours.
“It was good fun and for a good cause,” Ms Dean said.
Money raised from the event remains in town and goes into supporting the Cancer Support Group of Tenterfield.
“All the money we make stays here – in the years we did it we raised $40,000. It was our biggest fundraiser for the cancer support group.”
With preparations underway for the August event, getting willing participants was inevitably going to be the hardest element.
“We’ve begun practicing – getting people was hard,” Ms Dean said.
“Two couples have already pulled out so we have seven couples at the moment and just need to get one more person to maybe have eight.
“We’re just starting the dancers out with the basics and what to do and it will get more intense as it goes on,” she said.
Ex-dancers and ongoing helpers Heather Middleton and Kay Miller along with former ballerina Beryl Dean will put the participants through their paces on a weekly basis.
“We want them to know it doesn’t have to be fancy but we want them to do it well,” Ms Dean said.
“The people who are doing it really love it.”
Performers will be asked to perform a slow and fast paced dance, each for two minutes.
“We’re hoping they’ll jazz it up a bit.”
Cameron Bolton and Jaime Morgan won the last competition and will take to the floors again to defend their crown.
Ruth and Daryl Offer, Jenny and Kevin Santin, Kay Francis and George Reid, Lara Flanagan and Mikel Lewis, Kelly McCotter and Daniel Puglisi and Caitlin Reid and Dan Ford are the other couples for the 2014 competition.
This year’s event will be held at the Tenterfield Golf Club on Friday and Saturday, August 29-30.
