Fish may have been scarce on Monday as Youth Week activities kicked off with a free fishing workshop, but the participants went home happy and fully-equipped for their next outing.
Organiser Michael Davey of Fishcare was in his element, sharing his passion for the pastime with the younger newcomers to the activity.
Participants learned to fish safely and responsibly before being let loose along a section of the Tenterfield Dam waterline. There was plenty of expertise on hand to help with the snags and tangled lines, with Fishcare, Ozfish Unlimited, NSW Fisheries and other volunteers supervising.

Work on the dam wall meant the water level had dropped so the novice fishers caught more weed than anything else. Still they finished the workshop armed with the knowledge to catch their own dinner.
In addition they left with a free rod-and-reel combination, shirt, hat, tackle box and show bag, thanks to sponsorship from Tenterfield Shire Council as part of Youth Week.
Local businesses also came on board with Tenterfield Bakery and Wizards Butchery donating bread and sausages, respectively, for a sausage sizzle during the workshop to raise money for The Sir Henry Parkes Memorial Public School’s Literacy and Numeracy program.
Youth Week activities continue with a free art workshop in Bruxner Park on Tuesday, movies at Tenterfield Cinema on Wednesday and a free hip hop workshop at BFIT Gym on Friday.
Watch Mr Davey talk about the popularity of the workshops. (Apologies for the wind-affected audio. It was quite blowy at the dam.)
