In a female-dominated occupation, Milestones CBD Early Learning Centre trainee educator Hamish Carr provides care to toddler-aged children.
“I’ve always been good with kids, so I wanted to give it a go,” he said.
Late last year Mr Carr started his career within the childcare industry, and he’s tried to bring fresh ideas to the centre.
“Since starting I’ve learnt to play the violin, as learning through music is important and essential to children’s development,” he said.
The median salary for an early childcare worker is $38,000 a year, and the profession is forecast to grow significantly in the next three years, according to TAFE NSW.

Employment is forecast to grow by 1440 jobs, and youth unemployment is set to fall 18.7 per cent for 15-to-19-year-olds, and just over 10 per cent for those aged 20 to 24.
The national requirement for an educator is at least a certificate III in early childhood education; Mr Carr is lucky enough to be achieving this while on the job.
He is gaining first-hand experience taking two hours a week to study while learning from diploma-trained staff at the centre.
With the state government set to invest $1.77 billion into TAFE NSW, it’s likely course offerings will expand in areas where job growth is expected.
There are some key attributes any aspiring early childhood educator should have, and the job isn’t for everyone – you have to be passionate, Mr Carr said.
“They should be patient, calm and a reassuring educator with a genuine love for the children,” he said.
When looking for an educator, it goes beyond the qualifications, Milestones acting director Morgan Bates said.
“A bubbly and friendly personality with a willingness to learn, combined with enthusiasm, is something that we look for at our centre, not just the standard qualification,” she said.
Her advice to those wanting to work in childcare was to gain as much first-hand experience as possible.
“Learn from your peers and educators, as they all have something to share or give,” she said.
