“Asleep at the Reel” will be in Glen Innes this Saturday, July 21 (6.30 pm at the Hereford Steakhouse) and in Tenterfield on Sunday, July 22 (2 pm at the Commercial Boutique Hotel).
The band’s led by Mark Cryle (Spot the Dog; Murphy’s Pigs) who says that the music “evokes the sound of the lively Irish pub, of flying fiddles and rich voices in harmony around an open fire.”
It’s a kind of fusion between traditional Celtic music, particularly Irish music, and modern Australian song and rock.
Song-writer, Mark Cryle, said: “Celtic music has always been a big influence on my song writing”.
“I love playing with the tradition and bringing in new elements. It’s exciting to set lyrics inspired by Australian stories and local history to these Celtic flavoured melodic ideas.”
“Asleep at the Reel” is not a one man show. Mick Nolan (Pop Properly; Eureka) shares the vocal duties with Mark and adds the bass lines. Hugh Curtis (Troy Cassar-Daley; Lee Kernaghan; Beccy Cole) is one of Australia’s most in demand fiddle and mandolin players both on the concert stage and in the recording studio. Rose Broe (Pirate Brides; Shebeen) is another veteran of the Queensland folk music scene. Suzanne Hibbs (Peter Cupples; Sadie & Jay) lays down the grooves on which the whole delicious blend sits.
“I’ve always dreamed of having a band like this and now it’s my dream come true” said Cryle. “Most of the time I just try to stay out of their way.”
The band plays some of Mark Cryle’s compositions but also popular songs by such luminaries as Christy Moore, The Pogues, Van Morrison, The Clancy Brothers and Dougie McLean
Mark says booking for the Glen Innes show can be done by calling 02 6732 2255. The Tenterfield gig is free.
