Ensuring that hundreds of firefighters are being fed and watered has been added to their list of duties, as the Tenterfield bushfires enter their second week of devastation.

The Sopers have also headed up the local drought support system for the past 12 months as well, of course, as their usual pastoral services.

On a stopover to check out how operations are running at the hall, MP Thomas George commended the couple on their contributions.

"In 20 years as a politician covering 13,000 square kilometres, I have never met a couple so dedicated to their community and to leading volunteers," he said.

"It's been full-on for nearly 12 months and they've continued to work for so long.

"We appreciate their leadership. It's unequalled."

Mr George passed on the apologies and best wishes of federal member Barnaby Joyce, whom he said wished to be here but is tied up in parliamentary business.

Mr Joyce also urged the volunteers to ask for anything they require, but Mr Soper said the support effort is well-supplied and not in need of anything at this stage.

"Know that you just need to ask," Mr George assured him.
