The suburb is named after Henry Lawson so the ACT Place Name Committee was looking for street names with a Lawson connection. The legislation citation reads that writers including 'Banjo' Paterson and Lawson contributed to the emerging national sentiment, kickstarted by Sir Henry Parkes' famous speech on the steps of our School of Arts, hence Tenterfield Avenue was added to the map.
Tenterfield's annual Oracles of the Bush festival also got a mention in the citation.
