As part of the maintenance of the dam Tenterfield Shire Council is required to open the valve to ensure that it is operating smoothly. While this generally occurs on a monthly basis it was not scheduled during the drought.
Until weather conditions stabilise (with rain on the long term forecasts), council will be limiting the opening of the valve to once every six months.
"Council will be approaching schools within our shire to invite them to attend these future openings," Mayor Peter Petty said.
"This is a great opportunity for students to learn about how council manages our water supply in Tenterfield, and I would encourage all schools to get involved in future events."
