WITH the school holidays now well underway, the state government, with the assistance of NSW PCYC, is one again bringing summer fun to children in the region however, one event has fallen victim to COVID-19.
The NSW PCYC was to be on the road, reaching out to towns across the Northern Tablelands which experienced hardship last year, through its BBQ and Beats program. This has now been postponed with new dates to be advised.
"The events of last year caused a great deal of stress for communities across our region, in particular young people whose resilience was pushed to the limit," Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall said.
"This school holidays families in those communities hardest hit by bushfires, COVID-19 border closures and drought can enjoy a night out, with PCYC bringing the food and music for a fun-filled disco."
The BBQ and Beats road trip was to start in Moree, before heading to Bingara, Inverell, Glen Innes and Tenterfield this month but will now be held later in the year.
"All events are completely free to attend and are open to everyone, so I urge as many people as possible to get along."
The state government has provided $85,000 to allow approximately 20 PCYCs in affected towns to run barbecue and beats discos.
The successful Summer Break Camps at Lake Keepit will still be running.
"With the impacts of drought still hurting many families' bottom lines, the Summer Break program is again offering free camps to children in areas impacted by the disaster," Mr Marshall said.
"Over three days, kids will stay at the popular Lake Keepit Sport and Recreation Centre, participating in activities including archery, kayaking, bushwalks, cooking, and craft.
"Transport is no barrier, with free travel being offered from Tenterfield and Moree."
The first Summer Break Camp will be held on January 11 to 13 for children aged 13 to 15 with free transport from Tenterfield Visitor Information Centre.
The second Summer Break Camp will run from January 13 to 15, with transport from Moree Secondary College.
