Tenterfield faced Killarney in the Border Rugby League’s season opener and were out to make amends after their grand final loss to the Cutters last season.
The ladies league tag started the day’s action and threw down the gauntlet to the rest of the competition with a dominant display.
The newly-formed Killarney women’s side were playing their first competitive fixture since announcing their inclusion.
The Tigers ladies combined well to run away with a 46-10 win while Stanthorpe’s women’s side beat Wallangarra 20-10.
In the men’s game Killarney looked certain to claim an upset until the Tigers rallied late to win 36-26.
“It wasn’t a great performance – woeful really,” captain/coach Brendan Minns said.
“We gave a ridiculous amount of penalties away in the first half – they were just waltzing up the field every opportunity they had.”
At half-time the score favoured Killarney 12-10.
When play resumed they opened up that lead to 26-10 with 15 minutes to go.
“Something sparked in our brains and we turned it around,” Minns said.
Nathan Barraclough and Matt Brown orchestrated the turnaround as the Tigers notched 26 points in the final 15 minutes of the game.
“One of our boys walked off afterwards and said we didn’t deserve to win that game.
“I’ll take the two points however I can get them though,” Minns said.
The win sets up an enticing Anzac Day clash with Stanthorpe in Tenterfield.
The Gremlins were too good for Wallangarra in their opening game winning 38-14.
“They are definitely going to be hard to beat – patience will be the key,” Brendan said.
Murray Hovey will play the ‘Last Post’ prior to kick-off and local veterans have been asked to participate on the day.
“It’s one game we’ve definitely been looking forward to, especially playing Anzac Day - it’s not going to get any better than that.”
The under 18’s will also enjoy their first hit out and will get things underway from 1pm, with the ladies league tag at 2pm and then A-grade from 3pm.
