The 18-year-old Dubbo-based cycling champion decided he’d put his feet up for a few days with grandparents Beth and Jim Landers.

Adam took part in a 110 kilometre race at Currumbin Waters last week where he placed fourth.

“It was really hard – a really hard field,” he said.

But Adam has become accustom to the demands of long distance riding having been on the circuit for a few years now.

“I was on a bike when I was two. I went to kindy one day and they asked me where my training wheels were.

“For the last five years I’ve been on the national circuit,” he said.

He says mum, Jo Landers, formerly of Tenterfield, has played a big part in his ascent in the cycling world.

His delighted grandparents are also watching his career closely.

“We’re both very proud,” Beth said.

“He’s done it all himself – he’s a bright young man. We’ll be keeping a bit of an eye on him,” she said.

Last year Adam was atop the podium after coming first at the Cootamundra Classic – the youngest winner in the race’s history.

He’s planning a return to defend the crown, as well as a race in Albury, but not before a well-earned break.

“I think it’s a good time to take a break and build back up again,” he said.

With success, he’s inevitably attracted interest but he’s keeping his feet on the ground rather than getting carried away.

“I’ve been approached by a few teams.

“For now I think I’ll keep competing domestically. I’m young and don’t want to go overseas and get burnt out,” he said.

But ultimately the goal is to end up racing around the French Alps in the Tour de France.

“I think I’m probably still seven, eight, nine years off doing that.”
