Eight St Joseph’s Primary School students will have poems featured in the Young Xpression literary magazine.
Two of those will also have original poems in the Australian Bush Poets Association Magazine.
Maddison Riley, Chloe Thomas, Abbey Jones, Joshua Murphy, Courtney Ford, Josh Petrie and Anush and Anika Mondal were all cherry-picked by the publications.
“Having the two (Anika and Maddison) featured in the Australian Bush Poets Association Magazine came as an extra surprise we weren’t prepared for,” St Joseph’s principal Cherie Yates said.
“The stuff they wrote is really emotional, stop you in your tracks stuff,” she said.
The students were tasked with writing original poems around the theme of Anzac.
“It’s really exciting – I never thought we’d get our work published,” Anika said.
Other students said they were shocked by their inclusion.
“I’ve never had the opportunity to be in such a prestigious thing,” Courtney Ford said.
“This is one of my first academic achievements – I have a lot of sporting achievements but not really academic like this,” Abbey Jones said.
Young Xpression will publish the poems across both their September and November editions while Anika and Maddison will have their poems featured in October/November.
The primary school student’s work will line up alongside material produced by seasoned adult poets.
Ms Yates said the acknowledgement was a first for St Joseph’s and credited Oracles of the Bush president Jann Newman with aiding the students.
