Tenterfield’s Brandon and Ivy Cross have just returned home from their first competition of 2016 and they’re excited for what the rest of the year holds.
Ivy, 15, and Brandon, 19-years-old, made the journey down to Coffs Harbour together where Ivy recorded first, second and fourth placings while Brandon finished seventh and tenth out of 25 competitors.
Pretty remarkable considering it was the first time the pair had competed in ‘stadium cross’ racing.
Ivy has battled back after badly breaking her arm last year and took on the girls in the 125-250cc 13 to 16-year-old division.
The pair has had a long affiliation with motorbikes and said they can barely remember a time when they weren’t on the back of one.
“I was on a piwi 50 from three-years-old,” Ivy said.
“Over the years we’ve slowly built up a bit of a track on a block outside of town. It’s always sort of been our biggest dream to do this and Ivy is clicking along pretty quickly – she already rides ten times better than me,” Brandon said.
Both agree they owe their love of the sport to their parents.
“Mum and dad have definitely helped – without them we probably wouldn’t know what a bike was.”
With their commitment ultimately comes sacrifice, and both agree it can be hard to juggle riding and the rest of their lives.
“A lot of your social life goes downhill and it takes your weekends away. You’re either training or fixing your bike so you definitely have to be keen,” Brandon said.
Brandon’s currently working at Sexton and Green while Ivy is eager to start a mechanical or metal fabrication apprenticeship, but currently does some work at Willowtown Tyre Service.
Both credited those businesses as well as half a dozen others for helping them strive to reach their dreams.
“They’ve supplied us bike parts, supplied us a van for the season, lubes and oils – it all really helps,” Brandon said.
This year they will both compete in their respective divisions for the NSW title.
Ivy also plans to race in the Go Girls series, which includes the Queensland state title and says if she’s doing well she might step up to the Australian title competition.
