Players’ Player Levi McGrady scored three tries for the Tigers. Charlie Duroux scored two and Jarrod McIntosh one. Duroux also contributed five conversions and Tom Landers a single.
Captain/coach Brendan Minns said a highlight of the clash was the players’ determination to work hard for each other, with only 16 players travelling to Ashford forcing a limited bench.
Nevertheless he said the pace out wide was a standout and the forwards played well, creating a platform that allowed other players to work wide out back and create some havoc.
Minns said McGrady played well off the bench, filling in at dummy half. Duroux and Landers contributed pace and played extremely well.
The Tigers’ defence let in a few lazy tries and lost some focus in the middle sections of each half. The opposition was quick to capitalise on dropped balls and penalties restricted the Tigers’ time with the ball.
Minns said the team started off reasonably well although was put under some pressure with Ashford scoring the first try. Tenterfield then levelled up and were a few points ahead at half-time.
Tenterfield pushed out its lead scoring two tries in the first five minutes of the second half, although a mid-session collapse threatened that lead. The win was closed off with a final try in the closing minutes.
It will be a top-of-the-table clash this Saturday at Rugby League Park as the Tigers face Warialda. The two teams are level on points but Warialda is head on for-and-against, so Minns is looking to position Tenterfield clearly out in front.
Sadly Ethan Moore won’t be taking the field, having scans done this week on his injured shoulder.
“It’s disappointing, as he was strong in the middle,” Minns said.
“But we’re looking forward to the weekend to prove we are the team to beat this season.”
Minns is confident of a good outcome if the Tigers can remain strong in defence and limit Warialda’s time with the ball.
The games are a bit earlier with League Tag from 1pm and the men’s game at 2pm.
“It would be great to see a massive crowd,” Minns said.
