Despite the wet forecast, this year’s open day at Tenterfield Fire Station was a sunny affair with young families turning out to see demonstrations of the techniques and tools used by their local firefighters.

Firies showed how the jaws-of-life got its name, able to provided access to an accident victim trapped in a car by nipping off the car door. Fire captain John Gray said the live demonstration seemed to appeal to the attentive audience.
Kids also enjoyed that perennial favourite – pretending to drive the fire truck – while the mums and dads (and grandparents) could earn more about fire prevention.
Mr Gray said the open day was also an opportunity to promote the advantages of households having an evacuation plan, and to ensure their smoke alarms are working correctly. Everyone got to meet their local firefighters, tour the station and enjoy some fire safety presentations.
“Given the wet weather predicted, it was a pretty good day,” Mr Gray said.
