A very small army of helpers turned out to assist OzFish Unlimited volunteers remove rubbish from Tenterfield Creek on Sunday, March 4 for Cleanup Australia Day.
OzFish’s Michael Davey said only four people joined the OzFish members in the task, and he feels there should be more coordination between community groups to tackle such issues.
Still the small band managed to cover an area extending from the Naas Street bridge through to Apex Park at the southern entrance to town, collecting eight large bags of rubbish in the process. Several big items of rubbish including a farm gate, council barricade section and 200-litre drums were geotagged to alert council to the problem spots.
“We still managed to pull out a lot of rubbish,” Mr Davey said.
“We got it covered, and we’re happy with what we achieved.”
As anticipated the biggest issue was plastic, but Mr Davey was quite surprised that the creek wasn’t in too bad a state.
