The task wasn’t quite an mundane as it might first appear, as the dirt collected will form part of an ANZAC centenary project which will hold a small piece of the hometown of every WWI enlistee.
The last two locations in this area to provide samples were Drake Community Hall and St Peter’s Church at Old Koorelah, and Sunday’s expedition completed the task.
Close to 1700 locations across NSW given as a place of address by a WWI enlistee will be represented by a plaque and a sample of soil in a unique public art project to be displayed around the walls of Sydney’s ANZAC Memorial’s Hall of Service.
Memorial visitors will be able to view information on each listed location via digital devices. Information will include the details and date the local soil was collected, the names of every enlistee who gave that location as their home address, and pinpointed maps showing the local area and its surrounding memorials and schools.
