A dozen or more of Tenterfield Shire’s aging timber bridges may soon need to have weight limits imposed on them, according to mayor Peter Petty, to avoid a catastrophic accident.

“It’s what a responsible council should do. What if a cattle truck or worse yet a school bus went through a bridge?
“No-one would be able to live with themselves.”
A load limit has already been placed on Beaury Creek bridge last year due to structural problems.
While there’s no word yet on which of council’s 58 bridges will be affected, or when, Cr Petty along with chief executive Terry Dodds met with MP Thomas George and roads minister Melinda Pavey in Parliament House in Sydney on March 13 on the matter.
The delegation was seeking support from the state government towards the substantial injection of funds needed in the near future for council to address some of its timber bridge renewal challenges.
“I would like to thank both Thomas and Melinda for taking the time to listen to council’s concerns,” Cr Petty said.
“Whilst I know we have a way to go, the first step it to open discussions. The meeting was very informative and has given council a platform to approach.”
