The quirky works of Tenterfield potter John Donnelly are part of an exhibit opening at the Stanthorpe Pottery Club at 5pm on April 28, for people heading up that way.

Mr Donnelly is meeting in the middle to join up with Warwick-based potter John James for the exhibition at the gallery in Eduardo Verri Park, 47 Wallangarra Road, Stanthorpe. These two potters may share a first name but their works could hardly be more different.
The essence of Mr James’ pots is simplicity; functional, elegant shapes featuring subtle decorations. He started potting in the 1970s.
His works are thrown on a kick-wheel and often made from locally-sourced clay whilst his glazes are made from local plant ash, rock dust and clay. The pots are fired in a wood kiln, the wood ash enhancing the pots’ surfaces, and fired just once.
By contrast Mr Donnelly is an abstract painter who took up pottery only five years ago. He mainly builds by hand and enjoys the challenge of transforming a sketch into a three-dimensional object.
His colourful works have a playful exuberance. He will also have some of his paintings on display.
Items will be available for purchase during the exhibition which runs until Sunday May 6, open daily from 10am to 1pm.
For those with a yen to get their hands dirty, Mr Hames will demonstrate throwing pots using the wheel on Sunday, April 29 between 10am and 1pm.
