The latest rendition of daylight saving in NSW ends this weekend, with everyone encouraged to turn back all their clocks by one hour before going to bed on Saturday night. (In this age of smartphones, those devices set to 'automatic' will adjust on their own.)
Officially the 'fall back' happens in the early hours of Sunday morning, when 3am suddenly becomes 2am instead.
The end of daylight saving falls late this year, and just in time for some as the cold mornings start to bite.
According to a 2014 US Rasmussen Report, only 33 per cent of people in that country see the purpose of DST (Daylight Saving Time), so we're not alone.
Some prefer the extra hours of daylight after work, in theory motivating them to get out of the house. When DST was first introduced, more daylight meant less use of artificial light helping to save energy. Modern society with its computer devices, TV-screens, and air conditioning units uses more energy, so the amount of energy saved from DST is negligible.
For those either dreading or eagerly anticipating a return to daylight saving, we do it all over again on Sunday, October 6.
