Tenterfield High School SRC Student Representative Council members usually do a tour of council chambers to make Local Government Week, but there was a special item on last week's agenda with discussion of forming a Youth Advisory Council.

Mayor Peter Petty chaired the meeting and said he was very keen to see the initiative up and running.
"It will be the voice of the young community and what you think should be done not only in town but throughout the shire."

With upcoming state government funding has been earmarked for youth projects, and council wants input on how the money could be spent.
"It's not all about sport and the skate park," Cr Petty said.
"I'm sure there are things we're not aware of.
"We are sincere is asking you to be involved in the decision-making. Youth represent a huge part of this community."
Council's community development officer Rebekah Kelly, who is driving the project, at this stage is seeking expressions of interest from those who'd like to be involved.
The next stage of the process is then to get parental permission before the first meeting is convened, ideally before the end of the year. Decisions at that meeting will include how often the group will meet, although once a quarter is being proposed.
Mrs Kelly said Youth Advisory Council members will also be involved in organising events, such as those rolled out during Youth Week.
Isabell Halliday is one of the students putting up her hand, and she would like to see more focus on for youth beyond sporting activities. She's keen to explore options like an after-school homework club, and Mrs Kelly said Tenterfield Library staff are happy to accommodate such a venture.
