Multi-discipline dance classes take off

There must have been a pent-up demand for dance lessons in Tenterfield because a new dance school established at the B-Fit Health Club is already nearing full capacity.

Dance instructor Chloe Waugh said there are limited spaces still available in scheduled classes. Toddlers (2-5 years) dance at 10am on a Thursday, with junior classes in acrobatics (Wednesdays at 3.30pm), ballet (Thursdays at 3.45pm), hip-hop (Wednesdays at 4.15pm) and jazz (Thursdays at 4.15pm) proving very popular.

For the more experienced dancers there’s intermediate classes in acrobatics (Tuesdays at 3.30pm), contemporary (Mondays at 3.30pm), hip-hop (Tuesdays at 4.15pm) and jazz (Mondays at 4.15pm).

Ms Waugh (who’s not related to the Tenterfield Waughs) moved recently to town to join her partner and to provide a country upbringing for her three children. She ran dance schools on the Gold Coast for the past six years, and Tenterfield is just the latest phase in a 25-year dancing career.

Now also a qualified personal trainer, Ms Waugh started out with the Physical Theatre Company in Bega before becoming certified in classical dance, opening her first dance school at the age of 20. She has gone on to earn qualifications in acrobatics, hip-hop and jazz.

Child-rearing then took priority before her Live, Dream, Dance schools were established in both Bilambil and Oxenford.

The Tenterfield incarnation of Live, Dream, Dance has only been running a couple of weeks, with a rapid uptake of the classes.

“The first week I had a couple of girls, the next week 20 walked in,” she said.

“It does mean that spaces are now limited.”

She had only conducted one class before being invited to perform at the Tenterfield Show, and after some quick extra rehearsals she and her dancers entertained showgoers on both the Friday and Saturday.

She is excited about more public performances, with a concert also in the planning.

“The standard of some of the girls is quite amazing,” she said.

Ms Waugh is also offering private lessons, for those keen to perform in eisteddfods and the like.

In the meantime as she’s becoming more involved in the management of the B-Fit Health Club there are plans for mirrors, bars and even a certified extended bar to support the Live, Dream, Dance aspect of the operation.
