Hospitality teacher Karen Cooper said the students received good practical experience from the regular Tuesday cafe, dealing with customers, making milkshakes and delivering orders. Older students also make coffees.
Another bonus is the money generated, with $1500 donated to local groups last year alone. Mrs Cooper said the students like to keep their donations local and decide among themselves which charity to support, and the first recipient for 2018 is Legacy.
With discussions taking place at the end of term one coinciding with ANZAC Day, the plight of those left widowed by defence force service came to mind.
The weekly cafe will continue throughout the year and the next worthy cause targeted for some financial support is Challenge Community Services. Mrs Cooper said the idea came through Challenge’s presentation at Annette Miller’s Ladies Night In held at the Tenterfield Bowling Club back in March.
